Please also come to Australia. The forgotten continent. I too have anxiety dreams - even at 68!! My dream is always having to sit an exam and knowing nothing. I suspect this actually happened to me. Being an introvert I am surprised to feel quite comfortable with public speaking. I now do an historical tour here in Oz. Ok it’s only 160 years old but I’m very excited to be part of it. So I may start having such dreams as I’m only building my knowledge as I go. Love the questions asked. Especially from kids
Oh so good to know someone I admire who seems brimming with confidence shares this anxiety too.
I happily lap up book tour offers for my debut The Seasonwife and then spend sleepless nights in terror and dare not eat a thing beforehand. I think it's partly because I live as a hermit while writing and mainly go out to take the book for a walk.
But then out I come and blink in the sunlight and find that most people really are wonderful and we all need to meet up to make more wonder in the world and render it less cruel.
I will be in London in November. Hope you will be speaking nearby so I can attend. If I was still teaching public speaking, as I did for over 30 yesrs, I would be using you as an example of how to do it right.
lol, that’s a good one on testicles. My mind occasionally will keep thinking about things in bed , I get up and make a cup of Joe , I start my day early and I actually feel better. You have many admirers here in the USA!
When I saw you the first time it was at Stamford Arts Centre and you sort of crept out the side of the stage and it was so brilliant. You are so confident speaking its hard to imagine you nervous.
The best way is to walk with Christ and his Holy Spirit from above. He will show you that nervousness is deception coming through the ear and not from him.
I feared speaking out all the way through school and would not do so until I became a born again christian. A term people no longer use. I was praying about not being able to speak and thoughts inside me told me I had a voice and usually things to say and that I was listening to a lie telling me I could not speak out loud. As soon as I realised the truth, I had freed myself to start speaking out.
2 Corinthians 10v23 is a good verse. We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Also that we walk by faith (that talking will go right) and not by sight.
The bible study - bible in one year or bible with Nicky and Pippa today mentions all Moses fears. You have got the wrong person exodus3v11-12a. I am not ready for this v13-14. I might fail 4v1. I do not have the skills v10. Someone else will do it v13.
Yesterday's message - God tells Moses not to worry about the hostility he will face, all that matters is that I AM who I AM is with him. He is sufficient for all your fears, anxieties and challenges.
Thank you for this wonderfully helpful article, Lucy! I’ve just been approached to do something - involving public speaking - that I’m really nervous about but would be a *huge* step forward for my professional goals. Your quote from Queen Victoria is one I think I will write out and stick up somewhere!
First I agree with John Harding's comments. I view Lucy as a great example to give a talk or presentation.
I do a fair amount of public speaking and presentations (I just did a webinar this morning). Some things that work for me: (1) Be prepared. I'm only nervous when I feel I didn't prepare enough. (2) Put some humor in the presentation. It makes you more relatable to the audience. (3) The more you speak the easier it gets. (4) If using Powerpoint make sure everyone in the audience can read the slides. I have a rule that the minimum size font is 24. (5) Always look for ways to improve. I've even learned some things by watching Lucy
Thank you Lucy, what a super article. I do so love your total honesty and modesty. I've met countless people who say (me included) we wish we could speak, present and indeed write even half as well as you. I know how hard you work and the result of that and your natural brilliance at research and all related aspects always shows. Power to you and thank you for the pleasure, fun and Herstory you bring us.*

“Too much sodomy” must be added to a business card at some point.
I must confess that I didn't notice any jokes about sodomy in any of Jane Austen's novels! TIme for a re-read, clearly...
You are absolutely delightful! Please come to Canada! 🇨🇦

More photos of you with potato based snacks please.

I really enjoyed both your talks on Agatha Christie and Jane Austen that I’ve been to see in the past year. Informative, interesting and well paced

A refreshing and delightful look at the nerves of the famous!! I’ve always gotten them before public speaking.

The Edinburgh date is already sold out 😭 What's the best place to learn about future not-tours-honest?
