Oh Lucy yes!! I looked for sure! I imagine myself living in a castle in the UK quite happily. My only dilemma? Where? I think of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother buying her castle in Scotland. How wonderful that must have been for her!
I would love the thought of living in a castle. That castle Appleby looks like it is beautifully situated in Cumbria? I would love to have a Christian retreat centre. Or perhaps the odd history retreats too. Would not get many people to stay at a time there as only 5 bedrooms. So would make a luxury retreat home. Would make a lovely home. Beautiful kitchen and large rooms to put masses of books.
As for visiting Lady Anne for tea. Would be a delighy! I wonder what you would have got tea in the late 1500's early 1600's?
Lady Anne sounds amazing! And as for suggesting guests, I would really love it if you would invite Ruth Goodman for a chat about all things Tudor. Seeing and hearing the two of you chatting away is a cherished dream of mine, my two favorite historians together!
My daughter bought me a book by Philippa Gregory 'Normal Women' 900 years of history. It's a really good read. One of those very large books you pick up and read a bit whilst having a cuppa. I wonder if she'd be willing to chat with you sometime?
I don't know if I would buy it...the exchange rate between dollars and pounds changes! 😂
But, Lady Anne sounds like a woman ahead of her times! I think determined women can be intimidating at times.
I really enjoyed your visit with Daisy Goodwin, as I am a huge fan of hers, as well!! I have 3 of her novels; hopefully the play might make its way to the States? I did subscribe to her Substack page!
I lived in Kirkby Stephen and Appleby for a few years and found out quite a lot on Anne Clifford. I attended Mallerstang Church and used to drive past Pendragon Castle. She also had a hand in some alterations at the church.
Most certainly tea with Lady Anne and you at the same time; what an experience two feisty, determined women chatting to each other. And yes, if I had lots of spare cash after other good causes, I'd buy Appleby.
What a great heroine great choice Lucy not sure about meeting her either as you say she was definitely formidable. As to buying a castle, very romantic but l would need to win the lottery first and at my age ( about to say farewell to my sixties) l definitely would have the entire ground floor to my self no stairs for me!!. Loved the Sunday live chat please do more.
Hurrah for Lady Anne being so determined to get her lands and castles back! I’m not in the market to buy a castle, but I’d have tea with Lady Anne. I would like to know what she thought of Cromwell and which of her castles she liked best. Then I could show her photos of today’s world, although she might be tempted to want to keep my iPhone for the marvelous device it is. 😄

Unfortunately not, tea didn't arrive in England until the1650’s, I suppose you had to drink small beer with your scones?

If only I had the means, I’d purchase it in a heartbeat and hope to take tea with Lady Anne’s ghost 😶🌫️

I'll go halfsies with you... we can split the cost. Let's buy the castle!!
It looks like a great place to live... pity that it's a leasehold property though. I'd only go for something freehold 👍
I would have to pass on the 'tea with Lady Ann', she has a bit of a stern look about her person! I would much rather have tea with you dear Lucy 🙂
